Baby Proofing Your Home’s Electricity

Becoming a parent is life-changing. Watching a child grow up and become curious about the world around can be exciting as it stressful. One of the top concerns for child safety regards electrical outlets in the home. Baby-proofing may seem impossible as your child becomes more curious and adventurous, but it’s as easy as finding the right covers and tools to get the job done. Here are three tips for baby proofing your home’s electricity.

Plug-in or Slide Electrical Outlet Covers

The cheapest and most common electrical outlet cover is a small, plastic plug inserted directly into the outlet. While effective, it can by slightly inconvenient to constantly remove and insert the cover between each use. Slide covers are permanent, easy to install and automatically cover the outlet when not in use. However, these are a more expensive option.

LectraLock Outlet Covers

For heavily wired areas like entertainment systems, it is best to have a cover that keeps babies from unplugging appliances or causing them to fall over. LectraLock is a plastic box that attaches around the outlet and wires. There are a variety of brands and products that serve this purpose. Relatively inexpensive, these products can prevent injury and save lives.

Power Strip and Extension Cord Covers

Cylindrical plastic covers are great for keeping power strips inaccessible. The only downside is that to unplug or plug in a device, the entire cover must come off. Flat, plastic, floor cord covers prevent tripping and grabbing onto cords. Like those seen at concerts and staged events, these flat covers can be cut down to any size for use throughout the home.
Baby-proofing a home is no small feat, but with a variety of products and resources, it doesn’t have to be a stressful event. As your child grows, explores and discovers the world, there should be no worry of a mishap in the home. Using the products listed above will prevent electrical injury and restore peace of mind.
